The National Organization for Women (NOW) Foundation encourages women of all ages and ethnic groups to challenge the negative messages that are projected in the media towards women and their body image.
NOW asks: Do you love what you see when you look in the mirror?
They want you to know that Hollywood and the fashion, cosmetics and diet industries work hard to make each of us believe that our bodies are unacceptable and need constant improvement. Print ads and television commercials reduce us to body parts — lips, legs, breasts — airbrushed and touched up to meet impossible standards. TV shows tell women and teenage girls that cosmetic surgery is good for self-esteem. Is it any wonder that 80% of U.S. women are dissatisfied with their appearance?
Women and girls spend billions of dollars every year on cosmetics, fashion, magazines and diet aids. These industries can't use negative images to sell their products without our assistance.
Together, we can fight back. Love Your Body Day 2006 is October 18
We, at Jessie’s Hope, encourage you to support NOW in their effort to bring awareness of this issue to the forefront of our communities. It is our hope that each one of you, individually or as a group, take that step in bringing the awareness to your own community by taking part in an event or activity suggested on the NOW website.
Whether you choose to organize an activity at school or nominate an advertisement for its negative or positive message, know that you can make a difference by raising the awareness around eating and weight disturbance issues. Let’s change our way of thinking - instead of being looked at as an object, let’s work towards a society where we celebrate the inner strength and beauty of everyBody!
